004 – What are Advance Health Care Directives

004 – What are Advance Health Care Directives

The time to think about advance medical directives is not when you are on your way to the hospital for a medical procedure.  It’s now – while you aren’t under the stress of an impending medical situation.  So what are advance medical directives?  They really boil down to two documents: the health care power of attorney and a living will.

So, why would you want to use these two tools?  First, it takes the burden off of your loved ones when it comes to end of life decisions.  You can choose how you want to be treated in the event of your impending death without leaving those hard decisions up to your loved ones when they are very sad.  The second reason is that so your choices are followed.  Let’s say you decide you do not want life sustaining measures taken if you are certain to die very soon.  Once you enter the doors of the hospital you enter a land where doctors and medical personnel have a duty to save your life…and that may not be what you want.  The only way to get what you want is to have these advance directives.

In today’s episode we discuss the two types of advance medical directives, health care powers of attorney and living wills, and what situations you would use each.
