016 – A New Direction for the Podcast
This is the first episode for the New Year and I’m excited about changing the course of 6 minute legal.com into a slightly new direction. Over the past 15 episodes you’ve come to know 6MinuteLegal.com as a place where you can get your practical, every day legal questions answered. That’s not going to change. What is changing is that we are focusing our answers, 6 Minute Legal Briefs, and other information on our core audience…dads.
Dads have an interest in all types of legal issues – and just because it is a legal issue doesn’t mean it’s bad or negative.
For example, Dad’s of all ages have an interest in estate planning. Good information about estate planning issues will help you to make the best decisions when it comes of taking care of your families’ future without you. This is also an opportunity to plan for incapacity with a durable power of attorney and advance health care directives such as a living will and a health care power of attorney.
Married and Single dads alike may have an interest child custody, visitation and support laws and how those impact your relationship with your children. For married dads, this goes one step further by adding in separation, divorce, spousal support and property division issues.
Other areas of interest include issues of business law, insurance law, landlord/tenant law, and personal injury. My plan is to make this a place where you can find simple, applicable answers to your everyday legal questions. I know how paralyzing it can be when you don’t have an answer or a strategy. You’re interested in starting a business to earn some extra income, but you don’t know if you need to incorporate, form an LLC, or just be a sole proprietor – or maybe you didn’t even know to ask the question in the first place. Maybe your question is about how to handle things if you are the victim of a car accident or alternatively if you cause a car accident.
My name is Tripp Atkins and I am a lawyer, husband, and dad in South Carolina. I didn’t start this website or podcast to build my client-base. In fact, this has nothing to do with my law practice. I have two kids at home – a six year old son and a 21 month old daughter and I hope to use this platform as a place to help dads out with a topic that I know a little about and to share my dad life with.
I can’t just make this stuff up though, so I need your help. You can contact me in several ways: E-mail me at connect (at) 6minutelegal.com or visit 6minutelegal.com/connect or you can connect directly with me on Twitter @6minutelegal. Send me the questions you have and I’ll try to write an answer on the blog or even use your question on an upcoming episode of the podcast.
